Woman doctor as she searches for the secret behind the sorcery in her blood. This is the first of Mercedes Lackey s Elemental Masters series Although there are often connections between the books in this series it is not essential to read them in chronological order but I was trapped by this first one and have been eagerly grabbing the rest as they have been published This story centers on a doctor from India working in Edwardian London dealing with echos from her Indian culture As always with Mercedes Lackey s books the characters and settings are vividly described so you are drawn into their lives and get to know them and believe in them There are some pretty grim moments but they are essential to the story so bear with them As you would expect the doctor triumphs in the end but her adventures along the way will keep you glued to her story

I enjoyed this novel but enjoyed two of the short stories in this series GREY and GREY'S GHOST have a feel of Kipling and Dickens about them which this novel lacks Instead, it is a typical Mercedes Lackey fantasy, but set in London instead of some alien world or universe Being a typical Mercedes Lackey fantasy is not a bad thing as she is a master of the genre There is not a lot of action in this one There are accounts of the tria

  11. This is one of the best of the Elemental Masters series The vision of Victorian London is credible, the magic world is interesting, and the characters are picturesque and unusual It is well plotted and the ending is good I definitely recommend it.

not my favourite of the elemental masters series although I have still read it several times! It tells of the difficulties a female doctor of the time faced with the added complication of her mixed race ancestry Add in a malicious aunt and a romance and you get a very entertaining read.

The Serpent’s Shadow (2001) and The Fire Rose (1995) begin the Elemental Masters series with all of Mercedes Lackey’s flair and artistry in full bloom Both books are labelled #1 in the series which now has 16 books (1, 1, 2 15) and 2 anthologies. The Serpent’s Shadow begins quietly and gains in suspense and speed all the way to an unexpected yet perfect ending.
