E and things are not always what they seem and slipping ever deeper into a web of lies jealousy and heart stopping danger she comes to realise too late that the one thing that can save her has been right there all the ti. YA mysteries are my not so guilty pleasure Especially British ones Don t ask me why I love British YA mysteries so much There s just something wholesome and at the same time horrifying about them If you ve ever seen an episode of Midsummer Murders you might know what I mean Sharon Jones s Poppy Sinclair Mysteries of which there exist only two which is a crying shame are no exception Dead Jealous was especially lovely It s set at the shores of fictional Lake Scariswater where Poppy is attending a New Age festival with her mum and her mum s boyfriend How cool is that Dead Jealous was super original from the get go but even though I would have loved to give it five points I can t do that Here s whyKILL YOUR LESBIAN DARLINGSLet s get this out of the way There s an LGBT girl in this book and she winds up uite dead which I thought was a shame It s an unwritten rule of diverse fiction to not kill off your ueer characters if they re your only ueer characters ueer girls die left and right in fiction for the most idiotic reasons Just think of Commander Lexa from The 100 and Tara from Buffy There are many examples of this trope and it s seriously harmful We don t get many LGBT girls in fiction anyway and the few we do get usually end up dead which isn t very uplifting So no I was not okay with Beth dying shortly after we meet her Beth is the girl from the blurb the one Poppy finds face down in Scariswater the murder victim of this murder mystery And I kept wondering what the point of making her a lesbian was in the first place since all she does is give Poppy some advice and then drownIt is somewhat plot related but the plot would have also worked had she been straight or a boy In the end I felt like making Beth a lesbian was the author s diversity cop out Include a lesbian but don t let her survive long enough that you actually have to write about her It wasn t the worst case of bury your gays I ve ever seen though For the short time she was alive Beth was an interesting well fleshed out character and she kept influencing Poppy and the plot even after her death she was always somewhat present But she was still dead I also really liked how Poppy didn t take any bullshit from the homophobic people around her She was uick to smack their hate speech down and the overall message of the novel was that it s okay to be gay But Beth was still dead I would ve liked Poppy s snarky anti homophobia campaigning a lot better if Beth had been alive to enjoy it and take part in itI D GO TO THIS FESTIVAL FOR REALI enjoyed Dead Jealous a lot nevertheless Poppy was a great heroine She s your typical teenage sleuth but she s also really clever and strong minded What I loved about her was her constantly present internal conflict when it came to science versus esotericism She used to believe in the supernatural before her accident but now she believes in science But she s never really sure and that s something the novel plays with brilliantly Is something supernatural happening here Will there be a mundane explanation for everything in the end You re always wondering and so is Poppy I loved that I also loved that even though Poppy found the Wickerman festival and its attendants ridiculous I never felt like the author herself condemned esotericism too Everything is portrayed without judgement or mockery It was an interesting insight into New Age festivals and thought that I enjoyed a lotThe mystery was great too I could ve never guessed the plot twists and Jones managed to give Beth s murder and what and who was behind it a complexity that many mysteries lack There are reasons for everything that happened and happens and then there are reasons and twists and secrets There are so many uestions and they all get answered in the most interesting ways possible Poppy s sleuthing was entertaining to read as well She s clever and her figuring out clues and investigating the case felt real and reasonable It was fun trying to guess the answers alongside Poppy I also loved the ending There was so much suspense I found myself glued to this book for all of Christmas Day because I just had to know what had happened to Beth and how the book would endI also really loved the setting and the writing style Jones s writing is clear and beautiful evoking dark mythical images of the Wickerman festival and fictional Lake Scariswater It s easy to immerse yourself in the festival s surreal atmosphere and I loved thatTHE MYSTERY OF THE DIVERSITY FAILThe reason I m giving this book 4 points instead of 5 or even 45 is basically the bury your gays thing but there s to it There was another diversity fail at least I thought so This one was much smaller and I minded it way less but it was still there So there s a boy at the festival that Poppy falls in love with Tari Tari was lovely I loved him and Poppy together their dialogue and their romance It just felt natural and witty and their romance was sweet because Tari is a sweet boy and like the other characters well fleshed out and interesting So why is Ella complaining if the POC character was so lovely It s a spoiler It s not a big one and you re safe to read it even if you haven t read this book yet it won t spoil anything about the murder mystery don t worry I m putting it in a spoiler tag nonetheless because some of you probably don t like any spoilers at all so here goesview spoilerIt turns out Tari is selling drugs I was rolling my eyes so hard they damn near fell out I don t get this at all Sharon Jones basically introduced this charming lovely POC character and I was so happy to see a Muslim character as the love interest because that s super rare and then Jones makes him sell drugs for whatever reason What a fail Brown men selling drugs is such a stupid trope and there was no need for it to be included here at all hide spoiler Night Owl Loonette pleasure Especially British ones Don t ask me why I love British YA mysteries so much There s just I cannot compare Dead Jealous to any other book I have read because despite its romance there has an eeriness which makes the story addictive and lingeringPoppy seems depressed when we meet her although her mother's hand fasting is due to take place within the next few days She is confused torn between the Wiccan world of her mother and religious beliefs which her dad left the family for Poppy is also struggling with being in love
